Bronze Medal @ IBJJF New York Open |
|
As many of you know kenny has returned from Renzo Gracies in New York and from his latest competition receiving Bronze medal at the IBJJF NYC Open, one of the biggest BJJ comps in the world. He had a tough bracket and finally losing a close match to Clark Gracie on points.
"I felt good going into the Quarter final match but i should of been more relaxed about fighting a Gracie as iv been training with alot of the Gracie members for the last few months, i knew Clark is the NO.1 ranked guy right now but i shouldnt of been think about that, half way through the match i knew i could of worked something to get points but he played a tight match and by the time i figured his game out it was to late. But i learnt alot and would feel very confident next time and would open up more against him.It was just a shame he was in my bracket because i think i would of made it to the finals for sure. I would like to thank my coach John Danaher and Erik Owing for all the coaching and general wisdom, also training partners Gregor and Neiman Gracie, Gunnar Nelson, Leo Leite and all the guys from Renzo Gracies." Kenny will be back teaching at the gym this week, Mon-Fri starting at 6pm, anyone interested either contact us or just turn up. Nows the time to join or even get back into it as he will be coaching all the latest techniques and ethos. Whether its for Fitness, self defence or fighting because one thing for sure is you will have fun and be part of the family.. All welcome!!! |

As alot of you guys already know kenny has been training in New York with Renzo Gracie and will be spending most of the year out there preparing to compete in the world championships (Mundials). He arrived back a couple weeks ago now after being out there for over a month and his game, even though only managing two weeks worth of training due to injury, has come back with a very solid game! He will be going back out there mid september where he will be over there for two months, coming back to be with he family for christmas. Just shows the amazing commitment he has in wanting to be the best, which also brings the gym level that much higher! I can only imagine how hard it must be to be away from his family and friends for so long and i give him so much admiration. I know how quickly he learns and improves in BJJ, which i can say is very unbelievable, managing to become brown belt in about 3 years or so. Now he is training with the best in the world at Renzo Gracies with over 50 different black belts there and multiple world champions, im very sure it wont be long before we have our own world champion! Very good luck to him and wish him the best. |

The SBG Training Philosophy |
|
The Straight Blast Gym was created as a non political organisation where freedom to use, and discover what actually works in what "is" hand to hand combat could be expressed. It was meant as a place where athletes could gather and actually spar against uncooperative partners in all ranges, without worry of "style" or making what "is" combat into what we think it should be. The training we are speaking of is not an exchange of techniques as such, but actual physical training, sweating, moving, "ALIVE", training. Hence the term Gym, not academy, institute, or school, but Gym. |

What you will find at our gym |
|
A well structured class for everyone, where there is NO ego, politics, traditional martial art myths like titles, bowing, being taught techniques only to what your belt ranking allows you to be taught and having to respect me because I wear a higher coloured belt etc, (respect is earned through knowing a character and developing friendly relationships, while no one should say that you should limited the amount of techniques you learn until you gain your next colour belt). This is all rubbish, designed to maintain an instructors feeling of superiority and keep everyone below them by keeping techniques secret. You will not find this happening in my class. This is why I am referred to as the coach because my job is to help, guide and encourage your growth as a athlete and to become better than me. That is my goal. The word instructor means ‘a teacher’. But what if you become better than the teacher? A coach means, to me, someone who can help, guide and encourage no matter what level his or her students are at. I also believe the most important thing you can do in life is have fun and my classes are exactly that, where everyone is relaxed and can speak freely and have a sense of humour with one another. This is a great way in which you can bond, make friends while at the same time creating a gym that is close and tight knit, like a traditional family.
